Don't Call It Pampering: Massage Wants to be Medicine.

While massage may have developed a reputation as a decadent treat for people who love pampering, new studies are showing it has a wide variety of tangible health benefits.

Research over the past couple of years has found that massage therapy boosts immune function in women with breast cancer, improves symptoms in children with asthma, and increases grip strength in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome. Giving massages to the littlest patients, premature babies, helped in the crucial task of gaining weight.

Custom made Foot Orthotics

For many years people have been getting foot orthotics for foot, ankle, knee and low back pain. Moreover, some have foot orthotics because they have flat feet, other have some because they have high arches. How does all this make sense? And why would one benefit from having a custom made foot orthotic versus purchasing an insert from their local pharmacy.

When walking and running, numerous forces and stresses go through multiple joints in the body. When your heel strikes the ground during running, 1.5 to 3 times your body weight is absorbed throughout your body. Moreover, these forces and stresses can be even higher if you have a very rigid foot. If you walk the recommended 10 000 steps per day to maintain a healthy lifestyle, you can start to picture the amount of forces and punishment you put your body through every day.

Getting Old
People tell themselves things to make themselves feel better but the facts remain the same. For the most part you have the same potential for tissue growth and repair until the age of about 55 . The problem is that our lifestyles change and our attitudes change as we age, but our physical requirements don't.

Our whole life is centered around becoming educated so we can obtain employment that pays us well for performing very little physical work. If you think back to your university days, you got up early in the morning, went to class, played sports with friends, went out partying at night and then got up early the next day.

FITNESS

Hip Strengthening is Important, but not as important as Balancing throughout the range of Motion

Most exercises for the hip area concentrate on flexion and extension. In fact most machines are designed to accommodate that. But, the hip is a complicated joint that requires strong hip muscles in 3 degrees of freedom: flexion/extension, abduction/adduction, and internal rotation/external rotation. It is also important that these muscles are strong to stabilize the pelvis.

Strength Training for Good Golfers
One of the Journals I get just had a major article on the effects of an 18 week program of Strength Training for low handicap golfers. They divided the study into two groups. One just kept up their normal routine. The other group was given a specific training protocol.

FOOD & BEVERAGE
By Scott Saunderson, Executive Chef

Spring has sprung and summer is just around the corner. The Cambridge Club food and beverage staff are pleased to maintain the tradition of preparing foods for your weekend getaways as well as having a steady supply of home made burgers and other sundries.

Please give us a little advance notice for large orders and let us complete as well as simplify your grilling time.

In the weeks to follow please take note of the boxing night on May 5. This stands to be an fantastic evening all around, with not just a professional bout but also undercards that feature staaf from the Cambridge Group of Clubs. For those of you who feel a little "overworked" during your training sessions, revenge is yours.

Summer hours in the dining room will commence May 22. The kitchen will be closed in the evenings, but Damon will be happy to continue serving at the bar. We hope this does not inconvenience anyone. Again, we in the food and beverage department appreciate your continued support and wish a safe and fun summer to you and your families.

MAY DRINK OF THE MONTH
By Damon Limeback, Restaurant Bar Manager

Mojito
Weather’s getting warmer now, it’s time to bust out some classic summer highballs.

The Mojito comes to us from Cuba, and consists of rum, lime juice, mint leaves, cane sugar, and sparkling water.

Combine the rum, sugar, and mint leaves in the bottom of your glass. Muddle these ingredients together using a muddler, or the base of a shot glass. Add ice to the rim, the juice of a lime, and top with sparkling water. Garnish with a lime wedge.
