Chances are if you were anywhere near the downtown core yesterday, you heard the booming roar of 1000+ cyclists taking part in the annual Bike for Tykes 4 hour charity spin relay. The Bike for Tykes Spin-a-thon is an incredibly moving experience - literally and emotionally - for all participants involved, with all funds raised going directly towards the Cancer Neighbourhood within the Peter Gilgan Centre for Research and Learning at Sick Kids.
Nearly 200 teams gathered in the TD Courtyard on the southwest corner of King and Bay trading off on stationary bikes while top notch spin instructors (including our own Meg & Felix) led the spinning fun from the stage.
The energy was infectious as was the spirit. Child ambassadors were at the centre of the corral, energetic and eager to cheer spinners on while distributing fresh towels, water, bananas, and prizing to participants. There was also an award for Best Team Costume, and the coveted trophy rightfully landed in the deserving laps of the Toronto Athletic Club Sport Medicine Clinic’s “Brides on Bikes” Team (see picture below). Kudos to the team for spinning in full bridal attire in the blazing sun!
The Coast to Coast Against Cancer organization, along with incredible support from our members and many others working in the financial district and beyond, raised over $315,000 during this awesome event! It truly was an amazing day to help fund childhood cancer research.
