One of Toronto Athletic Club’s awesome cycle instructors, Brian Malone, went to France to compete in the GFNY Mount Ventoux!

For those who don’t know, Brian Malone is one of our great cycling instructors here at the TAC. Brian has been an instructor here at the TAC for two years, but cycling has been with Brian for the last ten years. Cycling for Brian is a sport that he really enjoys because it has a competitive side along with a leisurely side. Depending on your interests, it's a sport you can enjoy anywhere in the world! For Brian, you'll find him on a cycling bike until his body gives out.

As for the race, GFNY Mount Ventoux was a cycling race which was 132km and 3,200 metre of climbing. There were 2,100 riders for this race but only about 1,400 riders finished the full distance. Of course, Brian finished! With the goal of finishing with a time of 6 hours and 30 minutes, Brian demolished that benchmark by finishing the race in 6 hours and 6 minutes!

Q. How did you do?

Malone: I was lucky to finish it!! I was happy with my result, as I came in about 80th in my age group out of about 380.

 

Q: How did you train for the event?
Malone: I had to spend a lot of time doing hill repeats as we do not have any big climbs in Ontario.  So my training would include a lot of climbing and hours in the saddle. My spinning classes helped me a lot when the weather did not cooperate.  You are never fully ready for these events so that's where the mental game kicks in. You sometimes have to reach right in and get that extra little push that we all have inside of us. My training did pay off with the physical side but we have to get into race mode for the day. It is something that you really have to be positive about and believe you are going to give it your best shot and just finish safely.

Q: Would you do anything different training wise if you were to do the event again?

Malone: No, I learned the hard way over the years! It is all about keeping a pace that you are comfortable with and not getting caught up with some early battles. It is a long day!

 

Q: How was the experience personally?

Malone: There is no feeling like it in the world.  Just to accomplish this for myself is everything.  A person asked me why do you do this and my answer to him was "Because I can.  You never know whats around the corner."

 

Q: What did you learn from the event that you’d carry over to future events?

Malone: Do a few smaller ones just to get race fit.

Q: What would you tell a person who is interested in participating in the event for the first time?

Malone: Go out there and have fun.  There is always someone faster than you so don't kill yourself chasing! Finish your own race and give it the best you can. Then you feel like a winner!

 

Q: Are you planning on doing another race? If so, which event are you targeting?

Malone: Another event in France next year called Marmotte Granfondo Alpes which is 3 mountains so a lot more climbing.
