Living Well...together, while apart

This video reminded me, inspired me to be more open and curious. To judge less and to listen more. To be more patient. More careful. More kind. The video took 30 minutes to make. It's 4 minutes long. And it won an Academy Award.


We intuitively understand that powerful survival mechanisms include the urge to fight, to flee, to protect, to hunt, to master, to conquer. 

What about kindness?

Should this be considered a cultural construct and moral virtue? Or an evolutionary, biological adaptation?

Let’s look for a moment at Aristotle’s point of view:

“Kindness (…) may be defined as helpfulness towards someone in need, not in return for anything, nor for the advantage of the helper himself, but for that of the person helped.”

Okay. So, parents, family members, even entire villages nurture, support, and protect children. Ensuring they survive. And in the case where kindness is also levied, the children fare far better in the world. They thrive. So, one could argue that directing love and kindness toward children is an essential element of prolonging our species.

Moreover, any individual is far more likely to survive when they are part of a cohesive, highly functioning group:

“A tribe including many members who, from possessing in a high degree the spirit of patriotism, fidelity, obedience, courage, and sympathy, were always ready to aid one another, and to sacrifice themselves for the common good, would be victorious over most other tribes; and this would be natural selection.” — Charles Darwin, The Descent of Man

And even apart from the tribe, it turns out kindness can help each individual thrive.

  • Meditating on compassion is known to decrease inflammation and boost immune function.
  • Devoting resources to others decreases anxiety and depression.
  • Helping others buffers against stress.
  • The act of giving elicits greater pleasure responses than those triggered by receiving.
  • Kindness increases our sense of being connected. And strong connections are associated with longevity, strong immune systems, faster recovery from disease, and lower rates of depression.

So, go on. Keep being kind. Not only does it feel wonderful. It’s really good for you too.
