Time is on your side.

Living Well

Why aren’t you exercising… finish the sentence: “…as often as you’d like”, “…as long or hard as you need to”, “…at all”?

There are lots of interesting reasons why we don’t exercise on a given day or why – further along the spectrum – we stop exercising completely. But let me tell you, “not having enough time” just doesn’t cut it.

Don’t stop reading: I’m not for a second suggesting that balancing all the tasks and roles we have – especially now – isn’t incredibly challenging.

But think about this: At one point – typically when you’ve just created a new, important, or exciting goal, you DID have time. Ah-ha. Likely your life wasn’t any less hectic… so how did you make the time then?

Notice what I said: make the time.

It’s not about HAVING enough time, it’s actually about MAKING enough time. And we will MAKE time for things that are important. Things that are fun. We make them a priority.

Is it possible exercise is not as much of a priority for you? And maybe, in fairness, now it is not. And that’s okay. You can shuffle it a bit to side – as long as that’s actually okay with you (and I’m guessing you wouldn’t still be reading if that was the case?) AND as long as you don’t stop completely. It’s too tough to restart. Don’t be that cruel to yourself. If exercise can’t be a priority right now, please at least commit to 2 or 20 minutes of some type of activity every other day. It will be so much easier to ramp back up when you are ready.

My personal opinion is it needs to be a priority (not “the” priority, “a” priority) for everyone, because exercise is just so damn good for your body, mind, and soul. So, not making exercise a priority means you’re not making yourself a priority. But I think that discussion is for another day…

For those of you who really do want to make exercise more of a priority let’s get at it a bit: One of the MOST LIKELY reasons people stop making exercise a priority is because they simple aren’t getting enough out of it! Does that resonate? If you were getting AMAZING, SALIENT RESULTS, from exercise, why wouldn’t you keep it as a priority?

So maybe we need to look at exercise based results and how we get them. More on that next week…

In the interim, make time for YOU. Make yourself a priority. Remember: everything counts – 2 minutes or 20. Whatever you can fit in. It counts. You count.
