Get to Known Garth

You’ve seen him around the Club. Right now, you can even spot him gracing the Adelaide Club ads in the PATH. Meet Garth Sinclair, an integral part of the Adelaide family and the Club’s Membership Director. He’s oftentimes the first-person new members meet when they join the Club and can regularly be seen working out with his training partner Guy Jeong, one of the Club’s incredible Personal Trainers. Garth also leads four popular classes on our group fitness schedule. The Adelaide Club simply wouldn’t be the same without him, so we sat down with Garth to talk about his experiences at the Club, why he still loves coming to work, and his recommendations for new members.

We won’t mention how long, but you’ve been at the Club for many years, what makes the Club so special?

Like you said, I’ve been here for a long time and I’m still excited about coming in every day – that’s special. I’m the type of person who likes change and I’ve always looked forward to trying something different because I typically get bored easily. I’ve switched, sports, hobbies (like piano), and I’ve traveled so far to 52 countries (and counting) around the world because I always want to experience something new. However, being in an environment where Members and staff really seem as one… there is a unique camaraderie between those who work here and those who belong as Members. I’ve met some of my best friends in the years I’ve been here at the Club.  That’s what makes the Adelaide Club so very special. Here is a fun fact…This is the only fulltime employment I’ve had since immigrating to Canada from Jamaica!

You touched on it already, but can you speak a bit more about the community at the Adelaide Club?

I’ve seen and experienced a lot of relationships that have begun and developed here – Members who met in my class, gotten married, and stared a family – but I’ve also seen some really special friendships between Members and staff flourish. There is something special about the environment at the Adelaide Club. It fosters a genuine, authentic, friendly and respectful community that prioritizes health, wellness, and fitness.

You have a special role here at the Club, acting as both Membership Director & a group fitness instructor. What do you love about both of these aspects at the Club?

They are quite different – which I like. Heading up the Membership Department gives me the opportunity to meet almost every Member who joins the Club. Imagine just how many stories I’ve heard over the years. I sit with these new Members, welcome them to the Club, listen to their stories, and send them on a path to improving their fitness lifestyle – their journey really does begin in my office.

And then when it comes to teaching, it gives me the opportunity to actually be part of their fitness journey. It also keeps me in touch with our Members and I really appreciate the energy that they bring to the classes. There is a happiness that fills the room - it’s electric! I have some dedicated Members who’ve been attending my classes for years and I love having the opportunity to connect with them. Plus, teaching these classes contribute to my personal fitness. There are certain things I wouldn’t do without these classes – namely, cardio – so this gives me a great and fun opportunity to regularly get my cardio in!

Do you have any favourite spaces at the Club?

Hmmmm, I’ve never really thought about that before. I LOVE IT ALL. I’d probably then say, the Build Gym [which includes traditional dumbbells, free weights, etc.] because it has done such great things for me and my physical fitness. Although, our new STRENGTH GYM is pretty awesome too. If you can believe it, I was a very skinny kid – all skin and bones. I was told when I was 17 or 18 that I should start lifting weights, and that has really stuck with me. So I’ve spent a lot of time in the Build Gym using the weights and working with Guy to continue to improve my level of fitness.

I’d also have to say that the HUB’s lounge is one of my favourite spaces. I’ve been to a lot of other gyms and clubs in the city and around the world, and can confidently say that I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s a very unique spot for our Members to relax, work, and hangout.  We’ve had some spectacular parties in the space.

Now seems like the right time for me to ask about the three words that you think best describe the Adelaide Club.

Fun – sure, folks often times use that word loosely, but the FUN here is REAL!

Innovative – we’re forever introducing new things to the Club and changing what we do.

Community – I’ve said it before, but I can’t leave it out because a community really is who we are.

We couldn’t agree more! Alright, last question, what would be your recommendations for a new Member at – or someone who is considering joining – the Adelaide Club?

Be open to experiencing things that you originally never thought you would. When I show a prospective member through the Club, I always ask about the fitness activities the individual has done previously. Usually I get the answer of “I’ve always only done weight training OR I only want to do group classes” – which are both terrific, I love them too…BUT one can also complement “weight training and classes” with many other fitness activities. At that point, I let them know that we’ll explore the areas that offer the things they mentioned, but that I’m also going to give them an insight into a myriad of other options we have available at the Club.

To get the best out of fitness and “Club Life”, one should consider cross-training; do different things so your body doesn’t get used to doing the same movement. We are lucky because we have such a wide variety of group fitness classes here at the Adelaide – I mean, we have 120+ classes, who else offers that?!  - five studios and four gym spaces.

We know you’ve known Garth for years, but now we hope you know him just a little bit better. He’s an absolutely essential member of our team; we couldn’t ask for a better person to act as our welcoming committee.
